Students will receive an hour-long presentation with information concerning: the current legislation surrounding immigration, a brief overview of the college admissions process, resources (legal, financial, and social) available to students, and tips for college. Each year, ¡ALCANZA! Is hosted to promote higher education opportunities to more than 2,000 Latinx high school students. This year, we are excited to welcome Latinx students from across the country to the ¡ALCANZA! College Fair to hear from hundreds of colleges and admissions professionals. Kelly was born in the Congo but spent the first years of her life in Gabon.  At the age of 10, she immigrated to the United States with one family member, leaving the others behind.  Kelly grew up fast, learning English quickly so she could translate for her uncle and accepting responsibility for other relatives who followed her to the US in later years.  She defied the expectations of peers and adults and excelled in school, moving from ESOL classes to Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment.  Having personally experienced the ostracizing effects of bullying, she established the Peace Squad at her elementary school.  Ten years later, this group continues to create an atmosphere of support and acceptance for the students at the school.  More recently, Kelly has co-founded Cville 1st Gen, designed to serve first-generation students in their pursuit of higher education to reach their goals and dreams.  Kelly serves as the vice president of the African Student Association and Black Mambas. We are so happy to introduce another one of our amazing speakers: Yanira Merino was born in El Salvador, she immigrated to the U.S. in the 1990s at the time of an ongoing war at home. She joined the U.S. labor movement when she and her co-workers organized a union to confront poverty wages, wage theft, discrimination, and unsafe conditions at a shrimp factory where they worked, in Los Angeles. Following that campaign Yanira Merino worked in numerous union organizing campaigns, as well as in immigration rights efforts and Central America solidarity work. Since 2000, she has served as the National Immigration Coordinator for the Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA). Ms. Merino has stepped forward as the first woman and first immigrant to hold the Presidency of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) a task that has become crucial for immigrant workers and their families. 📣 Don’t forget to invite your family and friends to IM this Saturday, October 10th from 6-8PM EST! He graduated from George Mason University in 2015 with a degree in psychology. Since then, he has been providing social services to the immigrant community through various organizations, including The Dream Project, and his current employer, Mary's Center. He has attended many Immigration Monologues at Mason in the past and is excited to share his story to empower other undocumented youth, as his predecessors inspired him in the past. 📣 Don’t forget to invite your family and friends to IM this Saturday, October 10th from 6-8PM EST! In her current role at NAKASEC VA, she and a team of organizers work with Asian American communities of varied immigration status, English-proficiency, and income level to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all Virginians. She has a family history of domestic and international organizing and advocacy, and seeks to continue this legacy towards justice and liberation. Zowee is very excited to share and learn from the experiences of the Immigration Monologues attendants, facilitators, and fellow panelists to critically dismantle the illusion of the American Dream. 💬 Hear Zowee’s story next Saturday, October 10th from 6-8 PM EST via Facebook LIVE. First Gen Next Gen Fund applications are now open First Gen Next Gen Fund applications are now open Undocumented, DACA, and TPS students‼️ The FGNG Committee will consider requests for up to $2,000 for the scholarship application and $495 to pay for DACA renewal expenses. DACA Renewals are for current degree-seeking Mason students with an existing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis starting Oct. 1. She is very passionate about immigration justice and has an extensive background advocating for undocumented resources on her campus. After her freshman year, she decided to get involved with SAFIRE, the undocumented student led organization on her campus. Being the only Black and non-DACA student in the space, she quickly began to realize the different challenges she faced compared to her undocumented peers. As a result, she decided to create resources for non-DACA students by forming the non-DACA advocacy group, which consisted of undocumented students without DACA and allies passionate about their efforts. 📣 Hear Shirleen’s story on Saturday, October 10th from 6-8pm EST via Facebook Live! Luz is a fearless undocumented woman of color, a DACA recipient. Luz came to the U.S. from Bolivia at the age of 4 and has been a vocal leader in the DC metro area in advocating for immigrant rights and organizing her community. From shutting down roads, taking over elected officials’ office, to passing policies to protect her community. This name change brings us to a new chapter and we want to take a moment of gratitude for the members who came before us that have helped push us to where we are today. We hope that with this name change we can continue to move forward in the fight to liberate all our undocumented brothers and sisters. . .
